Why Your House Feels Damp With the AC On

Why a cool house can still feel damp.

Updated October 27, 2026

Summers in this part of New Jersey are humid, and some stretches are downright soupy. In July 2020, the warmest July the state has on record, dew points around New Jersey reached the upper 70s and low 80s. An air conditioner has to pull that moisture out as well as cool the air, and when it falls short the house feels clammy at any setting. If yours feels like that, call (732) 858-0915.

How an AC dries the air

Warm, damp air passes over the cold indoor coil. Moisture condenses on the coil the same way it beads on a cold glass, drips into the pan and runs out the drain. That only happens while the system runs long enough for the coil to get cold and stay cold. Short runs cool the air without taking much water out of it.

Common reasons a house stays damp

  • A system that is too big cools the house fast, shuts off and never runs long enough to dry the air.
  • With the blower set too fast, air moves over the coil too quickly to give up its moisture.
  • With the thermostat fan set to On, water on the coil blows back into the house between cycles.
  • Leaky ducts in a damp basement or crawlspace pull in moist air and spread it around.
  • A dirty coil has less cold surface, so it pulls out less water.

Fixes that help

Start with the free one: set the thermostat fan to Auto. A contractor can then check blower speed, measure how much the coil is pulling out and look at the duct system. If the system is oversized, a variable-speed replacement or a whole-house dehumidifier tied into the ducts can fix what the old system never could. A basement dehumidifier draining to a pump or a floor drain helps a lot in a house with a damp basement.

Questions about Humidity and your AC in Middletown

What indoor humidity should I aim for?
Around 40 to 50 percent in summer feels comfortable for most people. An inexpensive hygrometer from a hardware store shows where you stand.
Will a bigger AC fix the stickiness?
Usually the opposite. A bigger system short cycles more and dries the air less. Proper sizing matters a lot in a humid climate like this one.
